Dr. Joseph Mercola Discusses Cholesterol and Heart Disease

Cholesterol is a much debated topic in the medical community. Cardiologists and Big Pharma (big pharmaceutical companies) will tell you that lowering your cholesterol keeps your heart healthy. This is why cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are the leading drug category in terms of sales.

But Dr. Joseph Mercola warns: drastically lowering your cholesterol levels will increase your risk of dying!

Your body needs cholesterol in the same way that it needs air and water. Cholesterol is found in every cell of your body and is involved in important processes, including the production of bile acids, cell membranes, hormones, and vitamin D, Dr. Mercola explains.

Statins sell because of the fear that cholesterol increases your risk of suffering a heart attack. But not only is this treatment ineffective, it is also dangerous.

Lowering cholesterol does not address chronic inflammation–one of the root causes of heart disease and many other diseases.

Inflammation is your body’s response to foreign threats. For example, if you suffer damage to your arteries, inflammation causes your blood vessels to constrict and your blood to thicken. The damage you sustain is patched by a protective scar known as plaque.

Your liver makes more cholesterol to replace the damaged cells during inflammation because your cells cannot form without cholesterol. The plaque, the thickening of your blood, and constricting of your blood vessels, is what increases your risk of high blood pressure and heart attacks, NOT cholesterol, Dr. Mercola points out.

There are no studies showing that cholesterol can damage blood vessels and cause plaque and heart attacks. In animals, cholesterol must be artificially increased to levels never observed in humans before it can damage an otherwise healthy blood vessel.

Statin side effects
are also more dangerous than high cholesterol. Statins inhibit the production of cholesterol supposedly to help you have a healthier heart. But ironically, what Big Pharma doesn’t tell you is that these drugs deplete your body’s supply of CoQ10 (CoEnzyme Q10), which provides energy to your heart.

Using statin drugs to lower cholesterol will not help you reduce your risk of heart disease. Read Dr. Mercola’s  latest cholesterol article to get more detailed information and learn the eight steps to naturally lower your cholesterol.

Read your article on the importance of Cholesterol. How confusing when Heart Org publishes the following on their website:

240 mg/dL and above High blood cholesterol. A person with this level has more than twice the risk of coronary heart disease as someone whose cholesterol is below 200 mg/dL.

    Great article!

My doctor told me my cholesterol was high (total was 296) She recommended Lipitor, I researched the side effects and printed off the report and took it to her, and said I am not taking this.(I’m already on atenolol and HCTZ for blood pressure) She skimmed through the report and said that Lipitor had been on the market for years, and was the best drug out there to bring down cholesterol. I told her I am not taking it, that I could bring it down with diet. She said she would have to put in my file that I refused treatment. I said put whatever you want in it, I’m not taking it…… LOL My next visit, my cholesterol was down 50 points…….. with diet…….. nuff said.

I had the same experience with my doctor. They prescribe pills FIRST, then if you refuse, they suggest changing diet (they don’t say how!). Remember though, that numbers don’t mean too much. Big Pharma has set the standards and we know not to believe what they try to tell us.

I have a family member that was on statin drugs for about a year. He is now hospitalized with major muscle wasting and rhabdomyolysis. The doctors at the hospital do not know how to treat him because they have never seen a case like his. He can’t eat, he can barely speak and can only move his ankles and his hands. Please help!!!

I just saw Dr Oz where he had a man on who states you can eat all the saturated fat you want as long as you do not combine it with refined foods. Example. Eat the hamburger and cheese without the bun. He lost weight and lowered his cholesterol. Do you agree with this?

Make vegetables and fruits an everyday habit for your children, use olive oil when cooking pasta and add it to salads, avoid junk foods so they will grow healthy and won’t suffer from high cholesterol in their future, then when the grow up,they will thank you and appreciate what you were doing for them.

Teresa’s post is nearly five years old but I found an interesting article about Cross Fit and it’s exercises having a connection to rhabdomyolisis as well. Here is a link to what I’ve read. Just wondered if her family member was practicing CrossFit. But there are startling stats on the use of statins and rd.

My friend’s husband was on a statin and shortly after started having memory issues. Stopped taking it and resumed to normal.

  14. Joyce says on :

I would like to find some literature on what Dr. Mercola believes to be safe levels of cholesterol. I am getting off of my statin, but need to know what levels are truly “safe.”
